Wirtz wants to decide on future independently of Alonso
German international footballer Florian Wirtz is not making his future at Bayer Leverkusen dependent on coach Xabi Alonso staying on. "Of course I would like him to stay for a long time. But in the end, everyone has to go their own way and at some point I have to decide independently where I want to play," the 20-year-old told Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland.
Wirtz still has a contract with the Werkself until mid-2027 and thanks to his strong performances, with which he has made a significant contribution to Bayer's upswing this season, there has been repeated speculation about an early move for the midfielder. In addition to FC Bayern Munich, other top European clubs such as Real Madrid have also been mentioned as potential suitors.
The Whites are also said to have their sights set on successful coach Alonso and want to sign him as Carlo Ancelotti's successor in 2024. Wirtz does not want to be put off by all these rumors. "I'm not that far along yet and I'm not really thinking about my future at the moment. The fact is: I'm pretty happy at the club right now," he said.
Alonso is a central figure for him. "I feel extremely valued under him, I feel the trust - that's really important, especially as a young player. He gives me a lot of freedom on the pitch and always has a tip on what I can do better," said Wirtz about the Spanish head coach.
Despite the interest from top European clubs like Real Madrid and FC Bayern Munich in potential transfers for Wirtz, he remains focused on his current happiness at Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. The speculation about Alonso's future moving to Real Madrid as Carlo Ancelotti's successor in 2024 doesn't sway Wirtz, as he values the freedom and trust he receives from his coach in the Bundesliga.
