Tourism - Winter weather in Lower Saxony: First lifts open in the Harz Mountains

The wintry weather in Lower Saxony and Bremen continues. "The north is still under the influence of low pressure, it remains changeable," said a meteorologist from the German Weather Service (DWD) on Sunday. The Harz Mountains kicked off the winter sports season at the weekend, with the first lifts opening.

In Braunlage, the Hexenritt T-bar lift and a toboggan lift were open in the Wurmberg ski area, the highest mountain in Lower Saxony. However, the Wurmberg cable car was not yet in operation. The snow depth on the Wurmberg was around 40 centimetres. The rush of visitors was still limited, according to the police in Braunlage on Sunday. However, the parking lots were largely full.

A toboggan lift was open in Torfhaus and a chairlift and drag lift were in operation on the Matthias-Schmidt-Berg in St. Andreasberg. The snow depth there was around 25 centimetres. The ski area was well frequented at the weekend, said an employee of the operator Alberti-Lift. Cross-country skiers have been getting their money's worth in the Harz Mountains for almost a week now, with the first trails prepared and more in the pipeline.

It will snow again and again in the coming days. On Monday night, an area of snow will pass over Lower Saxony. According to the German Weather Service, one to five centimetres of fresh snow will fall and remain. The lowest temperatures will be 0 degrees on the islands, minus 1 degree on the Ems and up to minus 4 degrees in Wendland.

On Monday, there will still be lots of clouds and hardly any sunshine. A new area of snowfall will move in from the northwest and it will snow in the afternoon. Temperatures will be 1 to 2 degrees in Emsland and 0 to minus 1 degrees in eastern Lower Saxony.

In the night to Tuesday, the snow will change to rain and it will become milder. Freezing rain is also possible and the roads may become slippery. The lows will be 0 degrees on the islands, minus 1 degree on the Ems and minus 6 degrees in Wendland.

It will remain overcast on Tuesday. There will be snowfall at first, with rain possible later. Temperatures will rise slightly to around 4 degrees in southern Lower Saxony and around 1 degree in the northern parts of the state.

The city of Hanover, located in Lower Saxony, might also experience some snowfall over the coming days, as predicted by the German Weather Service. Visitors planning a weekend trip to Tourism destinations in Lower Saxony, such as Braunlage or Wurmberg, should be prepared for changeable weather conditions. Despite the rain in Bremen, some tourists still decided to visit Braunlage over the weekend, resulting in partially filled parking lots. The success of the winter sports season in St. Andreasberg, with a chairlift and drag lift in operation, attracted a large number of visitors. For cross-country skiers, the Harz Mountains have offered ample opportunities for enjoyable skiing for nearly a week. The video allegedly showing a Russian war crime has raised concerns, and criminal charges have been filed following a pro-Palestinian demonstration in NRW. Thousands of forced evictions have also been reported in NRW, adding to the growing social concerns in Germany.
