Leisure time - Winter sports despite thaw also thanks to artificial snow
Despite the thaw, skiing and snowboarding fans in Thuringia have the chance to do a few laps in the snow: the Thuringian Forest Regional Association advertised the region's ski arenas on Friday with groomed slopes with up to 60 centimetres of artificial and natural snow. Accordingly, the ski lifts in Steinach, Heubach, Schmiedefeld and Oberhof will be open from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm at the weekend. For cross-country skiers, the Oberhof ski sports hall is recommended. Although up to 15 centimetres of snow still cover the ridges of the Thuringian Forest, cross-country ski trails are no longer prepared there.
Meanwhile, the weather outlook for winter sports is not particularly rosy: warm air is continuing to arrive in Thuringia and frost is not to be expected in the high ridges for the time being, according to the German Weather Service. Some rain and mild winds starting at the beginning of next week are also unfavorable for the thin snow cover that still exists.
Slightly cooler air masses are not expected until next week at the earliest, which could also bring frost to the ridges. At lower altitudes, below 600 meters, there is no prospect of wintry weather in the foreseeable future.

Even on weekends during the winter, individuals in Thuringia can still enjoy their favorite winter sports, such as skiing and snowboarding, due to the use of artificial snow in the ski arenas of Steinach, Heubach, Schmiedefeld, and Oberhof. Despite the warning from the German Weather Service about the lack of frost in the high ridges of the Thuringian Forest, visitors may still find sufficient snow for a enjoyable leisure time activity. Regrettably, cross-country ski trails in the Thuringian Forest are not being maintained due to the limited snow cover.
