Weather forecast - Winter says goodbye: wind and "heat peak" expected
The winter weather of the past few days with snow and frost is giving way to an unusually warm phase. Over the second weekend of Advent, it will become warmer and windier in Saxony-Anhalt - on Monday, a brief "heat peak" with temperatures in the lower double-digit range is even possible, meteorologist Cathleen Hieckmann from the German Weather Service (DWD) in Leipzig told the German Press Agency on Thursday. "The weather over the next few days will feel rather uncomfortably like fall and not winter," she said. "There will be a lot of rain and a lot of wind."
It will also be very mild for a short time in the Harz mountains, which are still covered in deep snow. This is due to a kind of "warm air bubble", which causes the thermometer to climb to temperatures of up to 8 degrees Celsius from around 900 meters. "This also applies to the Brocken, where squalls are also expected," said Hieckmann. The snow will melt quickly everywhere and it will be slushy. "But we can expect precipitation coming from the west, which will probably come down as freezing rain or sleet."
According to the DWD, anyone wanting to enjoy winter sports in the Harz Mountains should do so on Friday. "We look at the weather forecasts every day," said Christin Wohlgemuth from the Harz Tourism Association in Goslar. "We were very pleased with the first snow, which was not to be expected. We were delighted with the surprise and are now checking the weather in the Harz on a daily basis." Winter hikes are certainly still possible here and there - as are visits to the Harz Christmas markets.

In Leipzig, meteorologists at the German Weather Service (DWD) are predicting a brief "heat peak" amidst the warmer weather, reaching temperatures in the lower double-digit range on Monday. Despite the mild weather, rain and strong winds are expected to create an uncomfortable fall-like feeling throughout Saxony-Anhalt, including Leipzig. When the precipitation arrives from the west, it could fall as freezing rain or sleet, potentially posing a challenge on roads treated for snow, such as in Magdeburg.
