Crime - Window drilled out and broken into: Indictment

A 48-year-old man is allegedly responsible for 21 residential burglaries and attempted burglaries in Berlin and Brandenburg. The public prosecutor's office in Berlin has therefore charged the man at Tiergarten district court, as the authorities announced on Thursday. According to the public prosecutor's office, the man allegedly stole valuables worth almost 19,000 euros.

According to the information, eight of the burglaries and attempted burglaries took place in Hoppegarten, eight in Kaulsdorf, Bohnsdorf and Rudow, three in Wartenberg and one each in Neu-Hohenschönhausen and Biesdorf.

Investigators noticed the particular way in which the break-ins were carried out: The perpetrator had drilled holes in window frames at night and tried to turn the window handles with a wire, for example. According to the public prosecutor's office, there have been an increasing number of break-ins using this method in north-east Berlin and in the districts of Märkisch-Oderland and Barnim since mid-2022.

When the accused was arrested in North Rhine-Westphalia in August after one such burglary, the series of crimes in Berlin and Brandenburg also ended, it said. The man is in custody there as part of the proceedings in North Rhine-Westphalia.
