Stendal - Winckelmann Museum shows caricatures by Honoré Daumier

Ancient heroes exposed to ridicule: The Winckelmann Museum in Stendal is dedicating an exhibition to the caricatures of Honoré Daumier (1808-1879). Following the opening of "Antike auf die Schippe genommen" on Saturday, the museum is presenting colorful lithographs by Daumier, who was also a painter, sculptor and graphic artist, until the beginning of March. According to the museum, the Frenchman mixed scenes from Greek and Roman mythology and history with the world of his contemporaries, which was perceived as bourgeois. Heroes of history were sometimes depicted as fat and stupid and then again as emaciated, it said.

In order not to lose the connection to ideal Greek beauty, selected casts of antique sculptures accompany the caricatures, as the museum explains. Also on display are works by Daumier that focus on other subjects, such as politicians.

According to the information provided, the exhibits in the exhibition come from various lenders, such as the State Book and Engraving Collection Greiz, the Wilhelm Busch Museum for Caricature and Drawing Art Hanover, the Chemnitz Art Collections and the Gipsformerei of the Berlin State Museums.

The Stendal Museum in honor of the archaeologist Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717-1768) was opened in 1955 on the site of his birthplace.
