- Wildlife potentially caused harm to the boundary enclosure in Mechernich.
Could be animals that did some harm to the water tower's fence in Mechernich, located within the Euskirchen district. The police department stated on Monday that it thinks an unauthorized intrusion is quite improbable. After finishing their probe, the state security unit reported no signs of a politically-driven act.
The damage to the fence initially stirred speculation about a potential intentional poisoning of the water supply at the military base. However, the city declared on Sunday that the water is safe and rescinded the boiling water advisory for the area.
The city's warning was also released in relation to similar events happening at the military base in Cologne. There, too, suspicions arose that the water system could have been tampered with, but that was found to be false as well.
Despite the incidents in Cologne, German authorities have ruled out any politically-motivated acts in both cities. The water tower in Mechernich, situated in Germany's Euskirchen district, seems to have been damaged by natural causes rather than a deliberate act.
