Regional court - Wife critically injured: Defendant wants to testify
A 35-year-old man is on trial at the Berlin district court for allegedly attacking his wife with a knife and causing life-threatening injuries. The man is said to have stabbed the 34-year-old several times in March of this year after a verbal argument in the apartment they shared in Berlin-Friedrichsfelde - until the police, alerted by the woman's teenage son, arrived. At the beginning of the trial for attempted manslaughter on Monday, the defense lawyer announced that her client would make a statement on the second day of the trial in a week's time.
According to the investigation, the near-fatal attack occurred shortly after midnight. The eldest son of the mother of three had initially wanted to mediate. The then 14-year-old then called the police. The German defendant stabbed the woman, mainly in the head and chest area, but also on her arms. When police officers arrived, the alleged perpetrator fled over the balcony. The 34-year-old's death could only be prevented by several hours of emergency surgery, according to the indictment.
The employee at the time was arrested shortly after the crime and has been in custody ever since. Five further trial days have been scheduled for the trial until January 8.
