Wiesbaden brings up the rear for charging points for e-cars

The district of Groß-Gerau has the most charging points per electric vehicle in Hesse, while the state capital of Wiesbaden has the fewest. This is according to data from the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). In the VDA's charging network ranking, Hesse is in penultimate place of all the federal states.

According to the ranking, there were around 21 electric vehicles per public charging point nationwide as of July 1 of this year. In the district of Groß-Gerau, the leader in Hesse, there are 6.5 vehicles, in Wiesbaden there are 115.7. The state capital is therefore not only at the bottom of the list in Hesse, but is also in last place nationwide.

In second place in Hesse is the city of Kassel with 15.5 e-vehicles per charging point. The Vogelsberg district is only just behind with 16.7 e-cars per charging station.

Hesse's largest city, Frankfurt, is only slightly better than Wiesbaden in last place, with 54.4 e-cars per public charging point. Offenbach occupies the penultimate place with a ratio of 70.8.

In absolute figures, the district of Groß-Gerau also has the most charging stations (1011). Offenbach has the fewest (38). The Bergstraße district has the most fast-charging stations (101) and the Odenwald district the fewest (7).

In a comparison of federal states, Hesse is in second-last place with 28.1 e-cars per charging station. Only Saarland has more e-cars per charging station (30.0). The front runner is Saxony with 13.9.

However, Hesse has upgraded considerably: According to the VDA figures, there were only 1014 publicly accessible charging points in the state at the beginning of the year. By the middle of the year, there were already 7236. 204,000 e-vehicles were registered in Hesse by the middle of the year.

Despite having more registered electric vehicles, Wiesbaden struggles with a low number of charging points, resulting in a high ratio of electric cars to charging stations. This situation places Wiesbaden at the bottom of both the Hesse and national rankings for charging infrastructure. Moreover, electric car consumers in Wiesbaden may face longer wait times or additional travel to find an available charging station.
