Basketball - Why Schröder was not nominated as Sportsman of the Year

First becoming world champion, but then not being a candidate for Sportsman of the Year: Basketball star Dennis Schröder shares this fate with soccer legends such as Franz Beckenbauer and Fritz Walter. At the prestigious gala in Baden-Baden this Sunday (22:15/ZDF), team athletes who are nominated with their team for the Team of the Year award will not be considered for the individual list. This has been the custom for decades.

The voting journalists can manually enter the basketball world champions such as Schröder or Franz Wagner in their voting list. However, the predetermined list of ten athletes does not include these players from team sports. This makes an award relatively unlikely.

Teammate Daniel Theis is critical of the preselection and criticized the absence of basketball captain Schröder. It was good that the team was nominated in the summer, the Los Angeles Clippers pro told the German Press Agency. "But I still think that if you become world champions, at least Dennis, who was also MVP of the tournament, should definitely be on the list, including for Sportsman of the Year."

Schröder had led the national team to the first World Championship title in their history. The Toronto Raptors professional was also named Most Valuable Player for his outstanding performances at the tournament. "When you get it as a team, it's still something nice, of course," said Theis. "But we've already had the biggest success." The basketball players are the clear favorites for the Team of the Year title.
