Suicide - White Fleet draws a positive conclusion to the season
Despite restrictions due to extremely low water levels in the Elbe, the Weiße Flotte has drawn a positive conclusion to the season. Although the level of the Elbe in Dresden was below 50 centimetres in mid-July, excursion boats sailed on all summer days, the company announced on Thursday. However, tours were canceled and fewer people were taken on board due to the draught.
By the end of October, 415,047 passengers had been counted. As the company also operates in winter, more passengers will be added by the end of the year. In 2022, 438,200 people had traveled on the White Fleet ships.
Persistent drought in Bohemia and Moravia (Czech Republic) has led to extremely low water levels in the Elbe in some places. The weather in the upper reaches of the river is decisive for the situation in the river. The Elbe is 95 percent fed by the large Czech catchment area.
The extreme conditions have only developed over the past five years, explained the nautical manager of the White Fleet, Jochen Haubold. "There has always been low water, but it has never been this low and long-lasting." However, as the Elbe is constantly changing, this could look different again in 2024.
The Weiße Flotte is the oldest and largest paddle steamer fleet in the world. The Dresden-based company is primarily known for operating and maintaining nine historic paddle steamers.
