Weather - While the railroads are on strike: weather service warns of "danger from black ice" in many parts of Germany

The German Weather Service (DWD) warns of slippery roads. Since last night, there has been a warning of significant slipperiness for a strip from the Jade Bay to Lake Constance, extending from the western border of Germany to Hanover, Erfurt and Ulm. In addition to freezing rain, light snowfall is also expected in the affected regions. In the west there will be light frost down to minus five degrees, in the south and south-east moderate frost down to minus nine degrees.

"Freezing rain with black ice in some areas from the west. Focus from the Eifel via the Sauerland to East Westphalia," according to the DWD weather forecast. Restrictions on road traffic are possible. The warning is valid in many places until Friday at 1 pm, in parts of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria until 3 pm. According to the weather service, the freezing rain could also turn into snow in the mountains. Snowfall of one to five centimetres is possible.

DWD and ADAC recommend staying at home

The DWD recommends avoiding unnecessary outdoor activities and journeys, adapting road traffic behavior and planning for delays and obstructions. Due to the train drivers' warning strike this Friday, it is hardly possible to switch to the train.

"Anyone who has the option of working from home should make use of this," an ADAC spokesperson told the German Press Agency, also with a view to the weather situation. "Because you can't rely on the alternative option of traveling by train," he added.
