Selecting Germany's entry is only the beginning of the international Oscar race. On December 17, the list of international contenders will be unveiled. From this list, the nominated films will be chosen. The Oscars ceremony is scheduled for March 2 (local time, March 3 in Germany).
At the 2021 Oscars, Germany's selected film for best international film, "Das Lehrerzimmer" by Ilker Çatak, didn't win any awards. Instead, the British production "The Zone of Interest" by Jonathan Glazer took home the Oscar in this category.
To date, merely four German productions have claimed the Oscar for best international film
Contrarily, last year, German film adaptation "Im Westen nichts Neues" directed by Edward Berger not only snatched the Oscar for best international film but also three more prizes for cinematography, production design, and film music.
Only four German productions have thus far received the honor for best international film. Apart from "Im Westen nichts Neues", this accomplishment was achieved in 2007 by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck with the Stasi drama "Das Leben der Anderen". In 1980, the film adaptation of "Die Blechtrommel" by Volker Schlöndorff scored this award, and in 2003, "Nirgendwo in Afrika" by Caroline Link did.
The announcement of Germany's Oscar pick is an essential step in the film award race. Regardless of who gets chosen, they will be competing for the prestigious film award alongside other international contenders.
