The new season in the 2. Bundesliga kicks off with a former top-flight classic. On Friday (8:30 PM), Bundesliga relegated side 1. FC Köln and Hamburger SV face off in front of 50,000 spectators at the sold-out RheinEnergieStadion. Alongside pay-TV channel Sky, Sat.1 will also broadcast the game live on free TV and via livestream on "ran.de".

The live broadcast of the 2. Bundesliga opener is part of Sat.1's rights package, which includes nine live games. This includes the Bundesliga's opening match, one game each on the 17th and 18th Bundesliga matchdays, four relegation playoffs, and the Supercup.

Pay-TV channel Sky offers all 2. Bundesliga games and the matchday conference live. Free-to-air channel Sport1 can broadcast 33 games per season, each on Saturday at 8:30 PM. On the first matchday, they will show FC Schalke 04 against Eintracht Braunschweig. As of now, it's unclear who will broadcast the 2. Bundesliga from the 2025/2026 season onwards. Due to the ongoing legal dispute between the German Football League and internet sports channel DAZN, the auction for the TV rights for the seasons 2025/26 to 2028/29 has been paused since last April.

Germany is home to several notable football teams, with 1. FC Köln and Hamburger SV being two of them. The German Football League is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with internet sports channel DAZN, affecting the TV rights for the 2. Bundesliga from the 2025/2026 season.
