Many will be interested to learn what will truly change in German supermarkets in the future. In the coalition agreement, the federal government has set the goal of making 30 % of agriculture and the food industry environmentally friendly by 2030.

To achieve this goal, the Federal Minister of Agriculture presented an organic strategy on November 16, 2023. Along with it, 30 measures were outlined that are to be implemented over the next few years.

Here's what will change in German supermarkets in the future:

The federal government sets severlal goals in response to the extinction of species and the climate crisis. In the long term, the entire food industry is expected to undergo transformation.

Farmers should be able to work economically while also protecting the environment, climate, and animals.

This is not the only change the federal government plans to make in supermarkets. Nevertheless, it is a specific long-term measure aimed at preserving resources, water, and protecting animals and people. This information is provided by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).

In addition to higher fees for organic farming, these 30 measures also include providing consumers with better access to organic food products. According to BMEL, organic products should be available to every citizen.

In particular, the press release states that more attention should be paid to organic products when choosing food in kindergartens, hospitals, and nursing homes – regardless of the budget. It is not yet specified whether organic products in supermarkets will be cheaper.

Overall, the "Organic Strategy 2030" is aimed at promoting more diverse offerings for consumers and sharing knowledge in the field of sustainable agriculture. According to BMEL, solutions to bureaucratic problems, such as financial support for farmers and research, are still in the planning stages.

Consumers will also face long-term changes. By 2030, the range of organic products should be expanded. Ideally, these products should be offered at a fair price. How exactly the assortment of supermarkets will look by 2030 is still unknown.

The federal government aims to make organic products more accessible to every citizen, which might involve reducing the costs of organic items in supermarkets. By 2030, the range of organic products in supermarkets is expected to expand, with the goal of offering these items at a fair price.
