What methods can help prolong the life of my mattress?
Does your mattress seem worn out and in need of replacement? Instead of just tossing it away, consider these tips on how to properly dispose of it and prolong the life of your new one.
The German Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (Nabu) reports that about eight million mattresses get disposed of each year, with 95% being incinerated and just 5% being recycled. This is a waste of valuable resources. To prevent this, here are six ways to take care of your mattress and make it last longer.
- Turn and rotate
Make a habit of turning and rotating your mattress at least every three months. This helps to keep it comfortable and prolong its lifespan.
- Remove stains and discoloration
The mattress cover can be washed to remove unsightly stains and discoloration. Before doing so, check the textile care label on the cover for washing instructions. The Industrial Association for Body Care and Detergents (IKW) suggests pulling the textile apart while it's damp to ensure it retains its original size.
- Vacuum clean
Vacuuming the cover can help keep it clean when you change the fitted sheet.
- Use a mattress topper
Stretch a mattress topper between the mattress and the sheet using corner elastics. This protects the mattress and the cover. Alternatively, consider using waterproof or water-repellent pads suitable for babies, small children, or people with incontinence.
- Utilize mattress protectors or toppers
Place a mattress protector between the slatted frame and the mattress to prevent slipping and scuff marks due to rubbing against the slatted frame. As for mattress toppers, they are typically between four and ten centimeters high and sit on top of the mattress. They not only provide pressure relief while sleeping but also protect the mattress. These are commonly used with box spring beds.
- Proper ventilation
For a good indoor climate with low humidity and temperatures between 17 and 19 degrees Celsius, there's less chance of mold developing.
When purchasing a new mattress, it's best to try it out thoroughly in the store before buying. This can help you avoid returns.
Indra Enterlein from the German Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (Nabu) offers some additional advice: "When purchasing a new mattress, there's a chance to save money and do something good for the environment. Some retailers refurbish returned mattresses and sell them at a lower price. It might be worth asking about this."
How to dispose of old mattresses
Here are a few options for getting rid of your old mattress suggested by Enterlein:
- Bulky waste: If you want the mattress to be collected from your home, you can order bulky waste or leave it out on the street on a designated collection date. The cost may vary depending on where you live.
- Visit a recycling center: If you can transport the mattress yourself, you can take it to your local recycling center.
- Exchange when purchasing a new mattress: Depending on the store, you may be able to return your old mattress when buying a new one. Inquire about this ahead of time.
