- What EM checks have brought from the perspective of the Federal Police
During the temporary reinforced controls at the German borders to Baden-Württemberg during the UEFA European Football Championship, hundreds of unauthorized entries were prevented, numerous smugglers were provisionally arrested, and more than 100 open warrants were executed, according to figures from the Federal Police.
A statistic from the Federal Police Directorate Stuttgart, responsible for the entire state of Baden-Württemberg, shows that between June 7 and July 19, 68,700 people were controlled at the borders, including 42,300 at the Swiss border and another 26,400 at the crossings to France. The officers turned back 1,579 people, most of them at the Swiss border. Furthermore, 1,567 unauthorized entries were detected, two-thirds of them from the south. 113 open warrants were executed and 26 suspected smugglers were provisionally arrested.
Baden-Württemberg's Interior Minister Thomas Strobl again called for border controls until the EU's external borders are sustainably secured, citing the recent successes as evidence against criticism of internal border protection. Temporary border controls at the German-French border will continue until September 30, covering both the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris.
The border controls at the land border with Switzerland are limited until December 15. The goal, according to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, is to limit irregular migration and combat smuggling crime. The Federal Police also aimed to prevent the entry of violent football hooligans.
