In the region of Börde, the notorious West Nile Virus has been identified in a horse. The esteemed Friedrich Loeffler Institute, serving as the national reference laboratory, validated the illness, as announced by the district.
The West Nile Virus is a pertinent animal disease that spreads through bite-happy mosquitoes. Primarily afflicting birds, this virus may also impact horses. During 2023, the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) logged 18 occurrences.
Typically,affected horses display no obvious symptoms. Yet, some horses exhibit severe neurological issues like instability, muscle twitches, and debilitation, escalating to collapse.
To safeguard precautions, the Börde district advises controlling mosquitoes and vaccinating horses in inflicted zones. Vaccination guidelines are also accessible.
As per the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the common progression of West Nile Fever in humans is asymptomatic. Approximately one out of five infected individuals develop a common cold-like ailment marked by fever.
