Penalty decision - Werder angry with referee Dankert: "I think it's unfair"
There was a lot of anger at Bundesliga club SV Werder Bremen after conceding the second goal in the 2-0 defeat in Stuttgart on Saturday. VfB player Chris Führich had just been allowed back onto the pitch by referee Bastian Dankert after an injury lay-off when Bremen goalkeeper Michael Zetterer played the ball into the international's path. A few seconds later, this resulted in Stuttgart's penalty. "I didn't even see the player. Everyone on the Stuttgart bench is wearing black jackets, the players have black shirts. It's extremely unfortunate. I think it's a bit unfair," Zetterer told the TV channel Sky.
Werder coach Ole Werner took a similar view: "Anyone who has ever played soccer at this level knows which pass comes next. If you know a bit about how soccer works, then you don't let the player back on the pitch."
Referee Dankert, meanwhile, justified his decision: "The ball was at least 30, 35 meters away from the player. It's obviously unfortunate that the goalkeeper didn't look up and played the ball right into Chris Führich's path. In terms of the rules, we can't do anything about it." Serhou Guirassy eventually converted the penalty. VfB coach Sebastian Hoeneß showed understanding for the anger on the other side: "It's an unfortunate situation. I don't need to say anything else. If Ole is angry, I can totally understand him."
