- Werder and former goalkeeper Wiese end legal dispute
Football Bundesliga club Werder Bremen and its former goalkeeper Tim Wiese have settled their legal dispute over a stadium ban for the 42-year-old out of court. "Even after two days of trial at the Regional Court of Bremen and extensive witness testimony, the facts could not be clarified in court. Both parties have therefore decided to settle the matter out of court," a joint statement from Werder and Wiese read. They had followed the court's recommendation to "find an amicable settlement." The stadium ban had already ended on December 31, 2023. According to the statement, both sides will bear the court costs equally.
Wiese Denies Allegations
The stadium ban was imposed following two alleged incidents during Wiese's visit to Werder Bremen's home match against Bayer Leverkusen in mid-March 2023. A catering staff member testified at the trial last November that Wiese had insulted her because of her skin color. Additionally, a second waitress reported racist jokes in the lounge where Wiese was also present.
Werder reacted to the allegations by banning Wiese from the stadium until December 31, 2023. The former national team player denied the allegations and fought the ban in court, deeming it unlawful. However, neither the club nor the former player agreed to settle or reach a compromise during the second day of the trial at the Regional Court of Bremen. An out-of-court settlement was eventually reached.
The initial stadium ban for Tim Wiese was issued by Werder Bremen and was to be enforced until December 31, 2023, due to allegations of racist behaviors during a home match. Despite these allegations, Wiese decided to challenge the ban at The Court of First Instance, with the case being heard at the Regional Court of Bremen.
