Railroad - Werdenfelsbahn closed for longer after onset of winter

Due to the onset of winter and the resulting delays in construction work, several lines in southern Upper Bavaria will remain closed for longer than planned, according to Deutsche Bahn. No trains will be running to Mittenwald (district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen) until at least the end of January, as the railroad announced in Munich on Thursday. "The construction work can only be continued and completed when the snow conditions improve."

The work should actually have been completed at the beginning of December so that the line would be open again for the timetable change on Sunday. Following the train accident in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in June 2022, in which 5 people died and 78 were injured, the railroad company began renewing sleepers and rails on the Werdenfelsbahn network. In an interim report, the Federal Railway Accident Investigation Bureau came to the conclusion that damage to concrete sleepers was probably the main cause of the accident.

According to the report, trains will not be running again on the line between Penzberg and Kochel am See when the timetable changes, but probably not until December 17. According to the railroad company, it has been replacing almost 600 overhead line masts there since the end of March. "Despite intensive preparations, man and machine have recently been pushed to their limits by the extreme weather conditions," the railroad company continued on the weather-related delays.
