"Welcome Center" at Magdeburg University becomes more expensive

The new "Welcome Center" on the campus of Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg will be more expensive than planned. The state parliament's finance committee approved additional expenditure of around 5.4 million euros on Friday, as confirmed by MPs Kristin Heiß (Left Party) and Olaf Meister (Greens).

Originally, the project was to cost 17 million euros. Completion is planned for April. The Ministry of Finance justified the additional costs of around 31 percent with increased material and construction prices, among other things.

The university's support and service offerings are to be bundled in the new building. The offer is aimed in particular at students from other countries and visiting academics. According to the university, the proportion of students from abroad was recently around 30 percent.

The extra funds approved by the state parliament's finance committee will contribute to the increased construction costs of the new "Welcome Center," pushing its total price tag above 22 million euros. With the addition of these resources, the building, intended to house various educational and support services for international students and academics, is anticipated to significantly enhance the university's commitment to global education.
