Weiser criticizes Werder's Füllkrug sale
Bundesliga professional Mitchell Weiser of Werder Bremen has criticized the sale of international striker Niclas Füllkrug to Borussia Dortmund. "Niclas Füllkrug was a very important player for me, who was ultimately let go for reasons I can't judge. It wasn't necessarily about maximizing sporting success," said the 29-year-old full-back in an interview with the multimedia portal "Deichstube" ahead of the home match against his former club Bayer Leverkusen (Saturday, 3.30 pm/Sky).
Weiser moved from Leverkusen to Bremen in 2021 and previously played for FC Bayern Munich. He would like to return to a similar level. When asked about extending his expiring contract, he also had clear words for his current club.
"I'm hesitating because I'm ambitious and want the club to give me the feeling that they have bigger goals than staying in the league. I'm waiting for that signal," said Weiser. "Of course, it's up to us players at the end of the day, but I think the club can also set a direction. We missed that moment at the start of the season in the first few games."
He was particularly annoyed by the first-round exit in the DFB Cup. "That's a lost opportunity - and I don't want to miss many more chances in my career," said Weiser. "My big goal is to win another title or play internationally. And I believe that's possible here."
Weiser, being a former teammate of Füllkrug at Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga, expressed his disappointment about the striker's departure to Borussia Dortmund. Despite Füllkrug's importance to his game, Weiser is uncertain about extending his contract with Werder Bremen, as he wishes to see the club aiming for higher goals than just maintaining their league position.
