Weil holds government statement on migration
Following the federal-state summit, refugee policy is also the focus of Lower Saxony's state parliament. Minister President Stephan Weil (SPD) has announced a government statement on the topic entitled "Humanity and order" for today's session (from 9.00 a.m.). Among other things, the federal and state governments had agreed on a change in the distribution of costs, but also on restrictions to benefits for asylum seekers, the introduction of a payment card and the examination of asylum procedures in third countries outside Europe.
Other topics discussed by the state parliament on Wednesday include the expansion of wind and solar energy. The state government, made up of the SPD and the Greens, will introduce a bill on the subject. The red-green government's goal is to use 2.2 percent of the state's land area for wind energy by 2026 and 0.5 percent for photovoltaics by 2033.
During the state parliament session, ministers also deliberated on the integration of refugees, linking it to the broader migration discourse. The Parliament discussed the need for Parliamentary committees to collaborate closely with the federal government in shaping refugee policies. Additionally, the Parliament acknowledged the importance of sustaining a balanced energy policy, highlighting the role of Parliament in approving the expansion of renewable energy sources, specifically in wind and solar power, to meet the state's energy goals.
