Weil clearly criticizes the CDU/CSU on migration policy
Lower Saxony's Minister President Stephan Weil has clearly criticized the approach of the CDU/CSU-led federal states in consultations on migration policy. The SPD politician said in Berlin on Monday following consultations between the 16 federal states that there had been a unanimous decision by all federal states on migration, refugees and asylum at the last Conference of Minister Presidents.
Weil said that they had been surprised by the comprehensive proposals for change put forward by the CDU/CSU-governed federal states and Baden-Württemberg - for example on the subject of asylum procedures in third countries.
The SPD politician said that some of these proposals called into question the results of the previous Minister Presidents' Conference and also raised other issues. "That explains why it has taken us so long to get everything in order," explained the Minister President after the hours-long discussions on Monday. "In this respect, today was not really refreshing." The federal states then want to consult with Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD).
Weil highlighted that the Federal Government needs to consider the concerns raised by the SPD and other federal states regarding the migration policy proposals put forward by the CDU/CSU-led federal states and Baden-Württemberg. The Federal states, led by Weil, are planning to discuss these issues further with the Federal Government.
