Weidenfeller criticizes BVB: Last bite missing
Former BVB goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller (43) has criticized Borussia Dortmund's attitude in some matches. "Dortmund lack the final bite and attention. In addition, there is perhaps too much respect for Bayern. I always wanted to win when I was on the pitch against Bayern," the ex-professional told the TV channel Sky on Thursday, "and I aired that.
BVB had clearly lost the top match against the German soccer record champions from Munich 0:4 last Saturday. This was followed three days later by a convincing 2:0 win against Newcastle United in the Champions League.
Weidenfeller won the German championship twice with Dortmund and was a substitute for Manuel Neuer in the national team squad for the World Cup victory in Brazil. Neuer is "just feeling his way up, getting match practice and regaining his confidence. We'll see in the spring how the cards are dealt at the DFB," said Weidenfeller.
With regard to the number one position at the home European Championships, which both Neuer and Marc-André ter Stegen from FC Barcelona want, Weidenfeller said: "One thing you can say: Neuer is always present on the pitch, (...) you can't irritate him. Ultimately, it's his quality and exceptionality to be so experienced and to have been through all situations."
Despite Borussia Dortmund's impressive 2:0 victory against Newcastle United in the Champions League, former goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller still believes that they lack the "final bite" and necessary focus in certain matches, particularly against Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. Weidenfeller, who won two German titles with BVB, noticed a respectful attitude towards Bayern during his playing days, contrary to his personal desire to always emerge victorious when facing them.
