The government expressed strong disapproval: "We firmly oppose #misinformation and the exploitation of the horrific incident in Mannheim," they stated on their platform at X. However, the fallacious details persisted to travel across the web.

On AfD platforms, a video of Weidel's speech at the "Pfalztreffen" of the AfD Donnersberg in Kirchheimbolanden on Saturday couldn't be found, but clips displaying the "AfD TV" emblem were still being circulated online. In the video, Weidel cites Faeser from an evidently forged press release in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

As reported by "T-Online", the forgery was most likely generated by ChatGPT, a language generator with AI. Initially, the AfD disregarded a request seeking clarification on the situation. Weidel had recited passages from this fictitious statement in her speech word-for-word, describing Faeser's presence in office as a "disgrace" and "disgusting." On X, she now stressed that her remarks regarding the Interior Minister will "stay appropriate."

In the knife attack orchestrated by a 25-year-old man of Afghan descent on participants of a protest by the anti-Islamic group Pax Europa in Mannheim on Friday, six people and the assailant were wounded. A police officer remained in critical condition on Sunday. Authorities had already searched the attacker's residence to gather proof about his motives and plans behind the crime.
