Wehen surprises favorite Fortuna: 3:1 win in Düsseldorf

SV Wehen Wiesbaden continued their run of success in the 2nd Bundesliga with a surprising away win and moved into the top half of the table. The promoted team won 3:1 (3:0) at favorites Fortuna Düsseldorf on Friday evening and thus remained undefeated for the fourth game in a row. Düsseldorf, on the other hand, who had not been beaten in four competitive matches, are likely to lose their second place in the table after the defeat.

Hyunju Lee (10), Amar Catic (26) and John Iredale with a second penalty (42) scored for the visitors in front of 27,715 spectators in the Düsseldorf Arena.

The game started perfectly for Wiesbaden. After Fortuna's center forward Vincent Vermeij had to be substituted with an injury in the 7th minute, Lee took advantage of the first great opportunity to open the scoring for the visitors after Thijmen Goppel's assist. Catic made it 2:0 a quarter of an hour later from a half-left position. Before the break, Australia's Iredale first hit the post with a penalty, but was allowed to retake it because Düsseldorf players had entered the penalty area too early and scored to make it 3:0. Shortly afterwards, Iredale even had the chance to make it 4:0.

The hosts pressed hard, but only managed to score the equalizer through Yannik Engelhardt (79'). Wehen's Ivan Prtajin was unlucky to hit the post.

Despite being promoted, SV Wehen Wiesbaden managed to secure a resounding 3:1 victory over Bundesliga 2 favorites Fortuna Düsseldorf. The win moved Wehen into the top half of the table, while Düsseldorf may relinquish their second spot following the defeat.

Fortuna's center forward Vincent Vermeij was injured early in the match, which Fortuna Düsseldorf failed to recover from, as Hyunju Lee, Amar Catic, and John Iredale netted goals for Wehen, with Iredale scoring a penalties twice.
