Bundestag - Wegner sees election rerun as a "major effort"
Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner sees the second election r erun ordered by the Federal Constitutional Court in his city within a short space of time as a "major effort". The CDU politician said on Tuesday after the Federal Constitutional Court's ruling that he had full confidence in state election director Stephan Bröchler that the partial rerun of the Bundestag election would run smoothly.
"The Berlin Senate has worked with him to create all the necessary conditions for elections in Berlin to function again," Wegner said. "In a functioning city, elections must take place properly." He called on all Berliners in the affected constituencies to go to the polls.
On Tuesday, the Federal Constitutional Court ruled that the 2021 Bundestag election in Berlin must be partially repeated due to numerous glitches. This affects 455 of the 2256 constituencies and the associated postal voting districts (case no. 2 BvC 4/23). The rerun is expected to take place in February 2024.
In February of this year, the election to the Berlin House of Representatives had already been completely repeated. Like the Bundestag election, it had taken place on 26 September 2021 and was also marked by glitches and electoral errors.
