Wegner postpones trip to Istanbul
Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner is postponing his trip to Istanbul announced for the beginning of December. In view of the political situation in the Middle East and the emotionally charged situation, the visit will take place at a later date, the Senate Chancellery announced on Thursday. "The dialog and exchange with representatives of our twin city Istanbul is very important to me, but I have decided to postpone the trip to the Turkish metropolis," said Wegner. The visit to Istanbul, accompanied by a business delegation, was planned from December 6 to 9.
Wegner had also announced at the beginning of October that he intended to fly to Tel Aviv in February. Berlin is planning a partnership with the major Israeli city on the Mediterranean coast. According to the Senate Chancellery, the trip is still planned for spring 2024. Further developments in the Middle East will be taken into account in the planning.
The Senate Chancellery will need to coordinate the rescheduled visit to Istanbul with the Istanbul authorities, considering Wegner's postponement of his trip due to the political situation. Wegner's planned trip to Tel Aviv in February, part of Berlin's partnership with Tel Aviv, remains on the schedule for spring 2024, subject to further developments in the Middle East.
