Finances - Wegner on the budget: Setting priorities in two years
Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner is still leaving open how savings of around 1.9 billion euros are to be made in the current budget for 2024 and 2025. He now wants to discuss this with the senators and districts, the CDU politician said on RBB-Inforadio on Friday. "Over the next two years, we need to set priorities as to where we can save these flat-rate reductions in revenue," said Wegner.
On Thursday, the Berlin House of Representatives passed the double budget for 2024 and 2025. This also includes so-called flat-rate revenue shortfalls. The estimated amount of the flat-rate savings required for both years is unusually high this time. On RBB, Wegner did not name any areas in which savings are to be made, but emphasized his priorities: "In the areas of internal security and education, I don't think we should make savings," said the CDU politician.
He also reiterated his criticism of the debt brake. He could well imagine launching a reform initiative by the federal states via the Bundesrat. "It is crucial that we do not launch an initiative that does not find a majority at the end of the day," said Wegner. "What the federal government is currently fabricating here, that petrol prices should rise, that heating costs should increase, in times of great uncertainty, when people often no longer know how they should pay for certain things, we have to provide answers. My answer is to reform the debt brake."
