Wegner: Common line of the federal states on migration in particular
Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) considers the common line taken by the state premiers in the migration debate to be remarkable. "From Bodo Ramelow to Markus Söder, everyone has reached an agreement," Wegner said on Friday in the Potsdam State Chancellery. "They have to manage that first." All heads of government agree that there is an urgent need for action, Wegner said ahead of the Minister Presidents' Conference on Monday.
He expects a pragmatic and "not a party-tactical approach" to the issue of migration. "I honestly expect the same from the meeting with the federal government on November 6," Wegner added. The federal government must provide more financial support to the federal states. In particular, he expects Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) to live up to this responsibility. The migration debate is about people's acceptance and trust in democratic parties. Brandenburg's Minister President Dietmar Woidke (SPD) added that there was an urgent need for decisions at federal level.
The state premiers had reiterated their demand for significantly more money for the care and accommodation of refugees in a joint resolution in October. They are demanding an annual lump sum of 1.25 billion euros for the federal states and at least 10,500 euros per migrant. In addition, the federal government should assume the accommodation costs in full. The Conference of Minister Presidents will discuss the issue next Monday in Berlin.
The federal states have shown unity in their approach towards migration, with leaders like Bodo Ramelow and Markus Söder agreeing on the need for action. Due to the increasing number of refugees, these states have repeatedly called for additional financial support from the federal government.
