Household - Wegner: Black-Red stands for reliability and stability
Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner has defended the 2024/2025 double budget against criticism. "The greater the uncertainty, the more important orientation, reliability and stability are. That is exactly what this coalition stands for," Wegner said in the House of Representatives on Thursday. The CDU politician pointed out that the Black-Red coalition was focusing on greater internal security and that the budget would enable the police and fire department to be better equipped.
"The time of ignoring problems, looking the other way and playing things down is over. There will be tasers, bodycams, firefighting robots and drones," said Wegner. "We are giving the emergency services what they need. We protect those who protect Berlin." The judiciary and public prosecutor's office should also be strengthened with more jobs.
Investments in science and research are investments in Berlin's future strength. This is why the increased funding for Berlin's universities is necessary. Wegner called the pay rise in the public sector a challenge for the budget. In his view, however, it was right and welcome.
Wegner rejected criticism from the Greens that the Senate was not making progress on transport policy. "They have left us with a lot of tidying up to do. We'll be dealing with this for some time to come," he said. The Senate will also make progress on the issue of security for Görlitzer Park. The fence he had announced would be built, the governing mayor assured. So far, the district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg has clearly spoken out against it.
The double budget, which was to be passed in parliament this evening, has a volume of 39.3 billion euros for 2024 and 40.5 billion euros for 2025. Expenditure has never been this high. A large item is allocations to the districts (around 11 billion euros each), with a particularly large amount of money also going to personnel and investments. As the debt brake applies, the budget will not be financed by new loans. Instead, certain reserves will be used up - which will then no longer be available in the future.
