Wegner, Berlin's governing mayor, called for action in asylum and immigration policies after a lethal stabbing incident in Solingen, allegedly by an Islamist, claiming three lives. "The attack underscores the necessity of delving into the roots and the circles of wrongdoers in Germany and enacting change," said Wegner, a CDU politician. "Sympathy messages post-attacks aren't sufficient; the federal government must take action."

Wegner advocated for the expulsion of individuals without asylum rights from Germany. "We ought to secure our borders against illicit immigration, as every 16 state minister has requested from the federal government for months."

Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD), Berlin, proposed expanding knife- and weapon-free zones and enhancing surveillance within the city. "We need additional knife- and weapon-free zones. They convey a strong message to potential assailants and amplify police intervention opportunities," explained Spranger.

The Berlin Senate intends to establish these zones through legislation at locales renowned for severe crimes, such as Kreuzberg Wrangelkiez. "These could extend to other crime-infested areas. We're currently collaborating with the Berlin Police on this matter," Spranger added. The Security and Public Order Act has been in revisions for some time.

Spranger further expressed interest in augmenting video surveillance at crime-prone locations through AI integration. "Whether this will aid in criminal identification remains to be seen." Deportations of criminal offenders to Afghanistan and Syria must no longer be suspended by Germany. She also advocated for targeted border control enhancements.

A 26-year-old suspect, a Syrian, was apprehended for questioning following the Solingen incident, which left three dead and eight injured, four critically.

Wegner conveyed his profound dismay at the allegedly Islamist perpetrator's actions that should have resulted in deportation months prior. "The attack leaves me unsettled." Regarding Berlin, Wegner stated: "Stabbing attack perpetrators typically are young males with a migration background. The judicial system must act consistently as it is well-known that anyone who stabs with a knife intends to kill or accepts the death of another."

In response to the knife attack in Solingen, Wegner emphasized the importance of identifying and addressing the underlying issues within German society, stating, "The attack underscores the necessity of delving into the roots and the circles of wrongdoers in Germany and enacting change." Furthermore, Wegner suggested stricter border control measures to prevent illegal immigration, stating, "We ought to secure our borders against illicit immigration, as every 16 state minister has requested from the federal government for months."
