- Wegner advocates for repercussions following the knife assault in Solingen.

Following the lethal knife incident in Solingen, Berlin's ruling mayor, Kai Wegner, is advocating for repercussions in asylum and immigration policies. "The incident highlights the pressing need for us in Germany to delve into the underlying factors and the involved circles, and eventually implement changes," stated the CDU politician. "The sympathies extended after such occurrences are no longer sufficient, the federal government needs to take action."

Individuals without the right to asylum should depart from Germany, asserted Wegner. "It's high time we fortify our borders against unauthorized immigration, as all 16 state leaders have been urging the federal government for quite some time."

Three lives were lost and eight were injured, four severely, during a city celebration in Solingen on Friday evening. A 26-year-old suspect, a Syrian, has been detained since Sunday evening, among other charges, including membership in the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) and homicide.

"The assault by an Islamist perpetrator who should have been deported months ago is profoundly disturbing," expressed Wegner. On the situation in Berlin, he commented: "The perpetrators of knife attacks are typically young males with a migration background. It's a fact that anyone wielding a knife intends to kill, as in Solingen, or consciously accepts the death of another individual. Therefore, the legal system must intervene decisively."

The European Council should discuss strengthening immigration policies, suggested Wegner, given the seriousness of the situation in Germany. The European Council needs to consider stricter asylum regulations and border controls, as advocated by Berlin's mayor following the Solingen incident.
