Frozen rain - Weather service warns of icy conditions in many parts of Germany
The German Weather Service (DWD) is warning of slippery roads for western, south-western and central Germany until midday on Friday. Since last night, there has been a warning of significant slipperiness for a strip from the Jade Bay to Lake Constance, stretching from the western border of Germany to Hanover, Erfurt and Ulm. "There is an increased risk of slippery conditions due to freezing rain. Danger of black ice," reports the DWD on its website.
In addition to freezing rain, light snowfall is also expected in some of the affected regions. In the west there will be light frost down to minus five degrees, in the south and southeast moderate frost down to minus nine degrees.
The DWD recommends avoiding unnecessary outdoor activities and journeys, adapting road traffic behavior and planning for delays and obstructions. The warning is valid in many places until 1 pm, in parts of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria until 3 pm. Due to the train drivers' warning strike this Friday, it is hardly possible to switch to the train.

The northern part of Lower Saxony, including Hanover, is also affected by the freezing rain, advising residents to be cautious on the roads. Thuringia, located in central Germany, is also under the DWD's warning, with potentially hazardous conditions on its roads. Bavaria, known for its beautiful Alps, is also forecasted to face these icy conditions until 3 pm.
In the south, Rhineland-Palatinate and parts of Baden-Württemberg are at risk of ice buildup on the roads, making traffic a challenge. The Bodensee region, encompassing parts of Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, could also experience slippery conditions due to the freezing rain. Hesse, located in central Germany, may also be influenced by these icy road conditions.
The city of Ulm, located in Baden-Württemberg, is another destination that might experience hazardous road conditions. The traffic in Offenbach, near Frankfurt am Main, may be affected as well, given the warning of icy roads. The DWD suggests that people traveling from Erfurt towards the west, including Bodensee, should be aware of the potential dangers on the road.
In light of the freezing rain and potential black ice on the roads, the German government recommends avoiding unnecessary travel and adapting driving behaviors accordingly. The Jade Bus, a popular public transportation option in Lower Saxony, may also face delays and obstructions due to the adverse weather conditions. It is essential to check weather forecasts from reputable sources, such as the DWD, before heading out. Whether you are in Bavaria, Thuringia, or any other part of Germany, staying informed and preparing accordingly is crucial to your safety on the road.
