Weather - Weather service investigates suspected tornado near Magdeburg
The German Weather Service (DWD) is checking if there was a tornado in Magdeburg. Based on media reports and damages, an evening storm on Thursday was identified as a potential tornado case, the DWD stated in response to an inquiry. However, a tornado cannot be confirmed as no clear image material and damage analysis is available.
In principle, the weather situation that day was not favorable for tornados. Therefore, there was a lack of the essential change in wind direction and speed for tornado formation. "Our radar data rather speak of a strong thunderstorm cell that produced strong updrafts," a spokesperson said. Media reported that residents of the town Lostau had reported a wind gust that had passed through the town. Among other things, several trees were uprooted.
The DWD mentioned that the evening storm on Thursday in Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt, had potential tornado characteristics based on media reports and visible damage. Despite this, the weather service hasn't been able to confirm a tornado due to a lack of clear image material and damage analysis. Regardless of the tornado claims, the storm in Magdeburg resulted in significant weather disturbances, as evidenced by the uprooted trees in Lostau.
