Bundesliga - Weather chaos: match between Bayern and Union Berlin canceled

Due to the weather chaos in southern Germany, FC Bayern Munich 's Bundesliga home match against 1. FC Union Berlin this Saturday (3:30 pm) has been canceled. This was announced by the German soccer champions.

"The reason is the extreme snowfall last evening and last night, an end is only forecast for Saturday evening. Even if it had been possible to get the pitch at the Allianz Arena in a condition that would have allowed the match to be played by the afternoon, safety risks and the traffic situation made a cancellation unavoidable," the statement read.

Roof avalanches in the Allianz Arena would represent an incalculable risk for spectators. In addition, access to the arena is hardly possible. "The Munich police recommend not leaving the buildings. Under these conditions, it cannot be guaranteed that the law enforcement and security personnel required to hold the match will be able to enter the Allianz Arena," the statement continued. It remains to be seen when the match will be rescheduled.

"We are very sorry that we have to cancel the match, but the safety of our fans and the supporters of Union Berlin has absolute priority. In addition, access to the Allianz Arena is not guaranteed due to numerous road closures and various public transport disruptions. We will inform you about a possible new date as soon as possible," said Bayern's CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen.

Snow and ice caused traffic chaos in the south on Saturday morning. Flight operations at Munich Airport were temporarily suspended until 12.00 noon due to heavy snowfall, according to a spokesman on Saturday morning. So far, around 320 of the 760 flights planned for today have been canceled.

Numerous railroad lines around the state capital of Munich had to be closed on Saturday night, according to Deutsche Bahn (DB). Train services to and from Munich Central Station were temporarily suspended. Passengers in Ulm and Munich had to spend the night in trains.

The weather chaos at Munich airport also affected the travel plans of national coach Julian Nagelsmann for the draw for the European Championship preliminary round in Hamburg. The gala in the Elbphilharmonie begins at 6 p.m. (RTL, ZDF and Magenta TV); according to the German Football Association, the national coach should arrive on time.

Despite efforts to prepare the pitch, extreme snowfall and safety risks, as well as traffic issues, made it impossible to proceed with the game. The decision was met with regret by Bayern's CEO, Jan-Christian Dreesen, who emphasized the importance of fan safety. Meanwhile, weather conditions also disrupted travel plans for national coach Julian Nagelsmann.
