Soccer - Weather chaos: match between Bayern and Union Berlin canceled
Due to the weather chaos in the south of Germany, the Bundesliga home game of German soccer champions FC Bayern Munich against 1. FC Union Berlin this Saturday has been canceled. This was announced by the Bundesliga club from Berlin and Munich's public transport company. Due to safety risks for all involved, it was decided not to go ahead with the match.
Due to the heated pitch in the Allianz Arena, the main concern was not the playability of the pitch, but safety and, above all, the arrival of spectators, some of whom were coming to Munich from further afield.
Snow and ice had caused traffic chaos in the south on Saturday morning. Flight operations at Munich Airport were temporarily suspended until 12.00 noon due to heavy snowfall, according to a spokesperson on Saturday morning. So far, around 320 of the 760 flights planned for today have been canceled.
Numerous railroad lines around the state capital of Munich had to be closed on Saturday night, according to Deutsche Bahn (DB). Train services to and from Munich Central Station were temporarily suspended. Passengers in Ulm and Munich had to spend the night in trains.
The weather chaos at Munich airport also affected the travel plans of national coach Julian Nagelsmann for the draw for the European Championship preliminary round in Hamburg. The gala in the Elbphilharmonie begins at 6 p.m. (RTL, ZDF and Magenta TV); according to the German Football Association, the national coach should arrive on time.
