We choose freedom": Harris releases campaign video with Beyonce song
Harris received permission from Beyoncé to use her hit after President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he would not run again and endorsed Harris as the Democratic Party's new presidential candidate.
In the spot, supporters of Harris from different generations and ethnic backgrounds are seen. The Vice President says at the beginning: "At this election, we're all confronted with a question: What kind of country do we want to live in? There are people who think we should live in a country of chaos, fear, and hate" - images of Trump and his vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance follow.
Harris then continues: "But we choose something different. We choose freedom." The Vice President then advocates for "the freedom to be safe from gun violence," and - in reference to reproductive rights - "the freedom to make decisions about your own body."
Additionally, Harris advocates for a future without children in poverty, universal healthcare, and "no one above the law." With this, she refers to Trump, whose infamous police photo is shown.
Harris, who was formerly the Attorney General of California, makes it clear that she will make Trump's legal entanglements a central theme of her campaign. Since the end of May, when a New York jury found Trump guilty of falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment to the former porn star Stormy Daniels, Trump has become the first ex-US President to be criminally indicted in history.
Harris has not yet been officially nominated as the Democratic candidate for the presidential election in November. However, according to her own statements, she has already secured the necessary number of delegate votes. No other contenders for the Democratic presidential nomination have emerged so far.
The Democratic Party headquarters decided on Wednesday to elect the presidential candidate as early as early August through electronic voting and not at the party convention from August 19-22.
