Winter weather - Water rescue service warns against walking on ice in Bavaria
As a result of the winter weather in Bavaria, the Bavarian Red Cross (BRK) water rescue service has issued a warning against walking on ice. "There is a danger to life if you step onto thin ice," said the state chairman of the water rescue service, Thomas Huber, on Tuesday. "If you fall in, you suffer a cold shock within a few minutes, which can lead to drowning."
According to the BRK, it is often difficult to tell from the outside when ice surfaces are thick enough and therefore stable. Among other things, currents and aquatic plants contribute to the fact that the ice cover on lakes can be unevenly thick and therefore "unpredictable".
