Companies - Water consumption by industry: three Rappbode dams

Businesses in Saxony-Anhalt consumed 355.6 million cubic meters of water in 2022, which is enough to fill the Rappbode reservoir in the Harz three times, according to the Statistical Office. The Office announced on Thursday that 724 surveyed businesses required almost this amount of water. The Office had questioned businesses with a certain minimum water consumption. Five years ago, the industry's water requirement was around 372 million cubic meters, which was higher, but 767 considered businesses were involved in the calculations back then.

The main water source, according to the information, is the withdrawal from rivers through their own intake facilities. In second place is the provision through public networks and water suppliers. In the coming years, Intel in Magdeburg will join as a new major water consumer. The company plans to use around 6.5 million cubic meters of water per year for chip production and would thus be the largest industrial water consumer. The water consumption corresponds roughly to half of the current water consumption of the state capital Magdeburg.

In 2022, the industry in Saxony-Anhalt was responsible for consuming a substantial amount of water, specifically 355.6 million cubic meters, which is significantly lower than the 372 million cubic meters consumed five years prior. This current water consumption level is enough to fill the Rappbode reservoir in the Harz three times, as noted by the Statistical Office. Furthermore, various industries in Saxony-Anhalt contribute to the region's overall water consumption, with businesses drawing water primarily from rivers through their own intake facilities and secondary from public networks and water suppliers.
