- Water companies replace old pipes
During construction work on Landsberger Allee in the Lichtenberg district, a new 430-meter-long sewage pipe has been laid underground. Residents and other interested parties were able to watch as the approximately one-meter-thick sewage pressure pipe found its new home during an "open construction site day."
According to Berlin Waterworks, the construction site is part of a large infrastructure project. Over the next few years, a total of four drinking water pipelines and two sewage pressure pipelines will be renewed on a length of approximately two kilometers between Landsberger Allee S-Bahn station and Vulkanstraße.
Some cast iron drinking water pipes have been in use since 1900 and are in need of repair. According to the waterworks, there is a risk of breakage due to age and material, exacerbated by the significant increase in traffic on Landsberger Allee. Approximately 50,000 vehicles, including heavy goods traffic, pass over the road and the water pipes daily. The four main drinking water pipelines to be renewed currently cover about one-tenth of Berlin's daily water demand.
The renovation project is planned for the long term: Six drinking water and sewage pressure pipelines with diameters between 76 centimeters and 1.20 meters are scheduled to be replaced by 2029.
In this large-scale infrastructure project, both the transport infrastructure of Landsberger Allee and the telecommunications through the reliable functioning of water and sewage systems are significant factors to consider. The renovation of the four drinking water pipelines and two sewage pressure pipelines falls under the category of transport and telecommunications improvements.
