Consumers - Water abstraction to become more expensive in Lower Saxony

Water abstraction is to become more expensive in Lower Saxony in the new year. A corresponding change is to come into force on January 1, as announced by the state chancellery in Hanover on Tuesday. The Water Act stipulates that fees are to be adjusted if consumer prices have risen by at least ten percent since the last amendment.

According to earlier information from the State Chancellery, a private household with an average annual per capita water consumption of around 46 cubic meters will now have to pay one euro more per year.

According to the State Chancellery, an amendment to a law will be recommended to the state parliament in order to keep the increase in water consumption cost-neutral for parts of the economy. This concerns the chemical industry, for example. For sports clubs, the fee for the irrigation of club-owned sports facilities is to be abolished completely.

The state expects the increase to generate additional annual revenue of ten to eleven million euros. This is to be used for water and nature conservation.
