Waste - Waste disposal is becoming more expensive - not everywhere
Inflation does not usually stop at waste disposal. However, waste disposal fees are not rising everywhere in Lower Saxony and are even falling in Hanover and Oldenburg.
According to the Zweckverband Abfallwirtschaft Region Hannover (Aha), the waste management association for the Hannover region plans to reduce annual waste disposal fees by around 6.5 million euros to around 172.7 million euros in 2024 and 2025. This is based on surpluses from the years 2020 to 2022 amounting to around 51 million euros. However, this still has to be formally approved at the association meeting on December 11.
For example, emptying a 60-liter residual waste garbage can every 14 days will then cost EUR 11.77 (previously EUR 12.17) per month. Over the year as a whole, this will amount to 141.24 euros. A basic fee of 6.14 euros per month will also be charged per home. This means that a total of around 215 euros (214.92 euros) will be charged. Emptying an 80-liter organic waste garbage can every 14 days will cost an additional 4.53 euros (previously 4.68 euros) per month, or 54.36 euros per year. A 60-liter organic waste garbage can is not offered in the Hanover region.
Citizens in Oldenburg can also look forward to a reduction in fees in 2024. "The reasons for the fee reductions are, in addition to the discontinuation of excess coverage from previous years, in particular a significant increase in the volume of fees and the positive effects of the waste campaign to improve waste avoidance and separation," the city of Oldenburg announced in response to a dpa inquiry.
In future, the city will charge 80.40 euros (previously 83.40 euros) per year for emptying a 60-liter residual waste garbage can every 14 days. In addition, there will be an annual basic fee of 50 euros per property (130.40 euros). The 14-day emptying of a 60-liter organic waste garbage can costs an additional 15 euros per year.
In Braunschweig, on the other hand, the fees for residual and organic waste garbage cans will be increased by 3.5 percent for the coming year. This is due to the effects of general price increases. In addition, the CO2 tax introduced by the waste disposal company Alba is making waste incineration more expensive, according to the city of Braunschweig. The increase is limited by the continuing decline in residual waste volumes.
For the fortnightly emptying of a 60-liter residual waste garbage can in Braunschweig, the cost will in future be 8 euros (previously 7.72 euros) per month and thus 96 euros (92.64 euros) per year. The cost of disposing of an organic waste garbage can of the same size will be €7.40 (previously €7.15) per month and €88.80 (€85.80) per year.

The rising inflation also impacts waste disposal costs in regions beyond Lower Saxony, such as Braunschweig, where fees for residual and organic waste garbage cans are set to increase due to general price increases and the CO2 tax. Contrarily, Hanover and Oldenburg are seeing a decrease in waste disposal fees, with Hanover planning to reduce annual fees by around 6.5 million euros. The city of Oldenburg will also lower fees, citing the discontinuation of excess coverage and increased waste avoidance efforts as reasons.
