Warnings to Union fans ahead of Napoli game

The fans of 1. FC Union Berlin should refrain from wearing their fan clothing outside the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona for the away match against SSC Napoli. The struggling Bundesliga club also advised its supporters to "avoid remote areas of the city of Naples" ahead of this Wednesday's Champions League match (18:45/DAZN). Napoli and the local security authorities had pointed out the risk potential for soccer fans, according to a message from the Unioner to the fans.

Around 2,500 Berliners are expected to make the trip. In March, violence broke out in the city at the foot of Mount Vesuvius when fans of Eintracht Frankfurt went on the rampage. They had traveled to Naples despite a ticket ban.

After the final whistle, the fans of the "Eisern" must remain in their block for around 60 minutes before they are allowed to leave the stadium. As the fan club "Eiserner Virus" wrote on its homepage, buses will be taking them from Rome airport to Naples beforehand. "We are still looking for a suitable place for a short break of one hour, as we want to avoid a stay in Naples itself at all costs," it said.

In sporting terms, the Union side face a difficult task. Coach Urs Fischer's side have already suffered twelve consecutive defeats in competitive matches and are going through their worst crisis since promotion in 2019. The Ironmen occupy last place in Group C with Real Madrid, Napoli and SC Braga. Union lost the first leg 0:1.

Fans of 1st FC Union Berlin should be mindful while watching the Champions League match against SSC Napoli, as their fan clothing might attract unwanted attention outside the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Despite thewarnings, around 2,500 Berliners are expected to attend, hoping for a change of fortunes for their struggling team, which has lost twelve consecutive matches in competitive matches and currently sits at the bottom of Group C.
