Warnings of severe weather and flooding for southern Bavaria

The German Weather Service (DWD) is warning of severe weather in southern Bavaria at the start of the week. Heavy continuous rain is expected until Wednesday, especially in the Allgäu region. Between 60 and 90 liters of rain per square meter are expected to fall in the Alps and in the southern foothills, and up to 100 liters in congested areas, according to a statement on Monday. In the Allgäu Alps, more than 140 liters per square meter are expected. It is also expected to be wet in the Bavarian Forest.

Stormy gusts of between 60 and 75 kilometers per hour in the south and west of Bavaria are expected to accompany the rain. Gale-force gusts of up to 120 kilometers per hour are expected on the peaks.

The Bavarian Flood Information Service is also expecting flooding in Swabia in particular. Due to the rain, the water level of the Iller is expected to rise, among other things. Message level 3 could be reached in Kempten and Sonthofen around midday on Tuesday. This could lead to isolated flooding in built-up areas.

The severe weather in southern Bavaria could potentially escalate into a storm, as gusts of up to 120 kilometers per hour are forecasted for certain areas. The German Weather Service predicts heavy rainfall, with up to 140 liters per square meter in the Allgäu Alps, which could exacerbate the flooding situation in Swabia, especially in Kempten and Sonthofen.
