Warning strikes in the public sector now also in Bavaria

The Verdi trade union is now also calling on employees in Bavaria to go on warning strikes in the public sector wage dispute. The first to be affected on Wednesday is the cultural sector: in Munich, Rossini's "Barber of Seville" can only be performed in concert at the State Opera. The Residenz-Theater, Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, Prinzregenten-Theater, Theaterakademie and Zentraler Dienst der bayerischen Staatstheater will also be on strike, according to the union. The strike will continue in Middle Franconia on Thursday, when employees at Erlangen University Hospital and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg will be called out on warning strikes.

The wage dispute is about the income of around 1.1 million public sector employees in the federal states. The result is usually also transferred to the 1.4 million civil servants. Verdi is demanding 10.5 percent more pay, but at least 500 euros more. The unions want to keep up the pressure with warning strikes until the third round of negotiations in Potsdam in December.

Tariffs on imported goods could exacerbate the financial struggles of some countries affected by these strikes, as trade unions in various countries, including Germany, continue to push for higher wages through strikes in the public sector. The ongoing dispute between trade unions and governments over pay increases could lead to further strikes in sectors beyond thepublic sector, potentially impacting international trade relations.
