Tariffs - Warning strikes in the East German steel industry
Around 800 employees in the East German steel industry went on strike on Tuesday. According to the IG Metall trade union, around 600 employees of Arcelor Mittal in Eisenhüttenstadt (Brandenburg) took part in the three-hour strike, as well as 200 employees of Schmiedewerke Gröditz (Saxony). On Wednesday, employees in Ilsenburg (Saxony-Anhalt) and Zeithain (Saxony) were also called out on a warning strike.
The union is demanding an 8.5 percent wage increase and a reduction in working hours. According to the union, the employers have offered a wage increase of 3.1 percent for 15 months. The next round of negotiations in the steel industry is scheduled for Thursday.
