Air traffic - Warning strikes in the cargo area at Cologne/Bonn Airport

According to the trade union Verdi, more than 700 employees took part in warning strikes in the cargo area of Cologne/Bonn Airport. Due to a lack of personnel, certain areas and halls had to be closed, said a union spokeswoman on Wednesday morning. There had been considerable delays in the loading and unloading process. The industrial action concerns the two parcel, express and freight service providers UPS and Fedex. UPS has 3500 employees at the site, which the company uses as a European hub. Work is mainly carried out at night. Fedex has significantly fewer staff at the airport than its competitor.

The work stoppages are taking place against the backdrop of negotiations for a new collective wage agreement that applies to around 176,000 employees in the freight forwarding and logistics sector in NRW. The two US logistics companies were chosen as examples to put pressure on the employers as a whole and to persuade them to make concessions under the collective agreement.
